MIS
Minimally invasive surgery is an alternative to traditional open surgery. (MIS) is done through small "keyhole" incisions through the assistance of miniaturized surgical tools and cameras or telescopes. It is also known as Laparoscopic surgery, endoscopic surgery, or minimal access surgery.
In recent years, MIS has increasingly gained popularity as the public perceives it as a safe and acceptable alternative to conventional surgery. At ParkwayHealth, our surgeons have the experience, expertise, and specialized training in performing many conventional and minimally invasive surgeries. MIS surgery usually results in less pain, less scarring, a shorter hospital stay, and a quicker recovery time. The main advantages are a low chance of wound infection and faster recovery, which translates into an earlier return to normal activities.
MIS Centre
The MIS Centre was established to ensure the continuity of MIS skill development, and the development of new laparoscopic techniques. Regular training programmes and workshops are conducted to update our surgeons. The Centre prides itself in providing the best and most advanced technology, facilities, and highly skilled professionals, to deliver the best quality patient care.

Clinical services
Cornea and External Disease
This subspecialty involves the diagnosis and management of diseases of the cornea, sclera, conjunctiva and eyelids, including corneal dystrophies, microbial infections, conjunctival and corneal tumours, inflammatory processes and anterior ocular manifestations of systemic diseases. Training in this area frequently includes corneal transplant surgery and corneal surgery to correct refractive errors.
Glaucoma
This subspecialty includes the treatment of glaucoma and other disorders that may cause optic nerve damage by increasing intraocular pressure. This area involves the medical and surgical treatment of both paediatric and adult patients.
Neuro-ophthalmology
Involving the relationship between neurologic and ophthalmic diseases, neuro-ophthalmology also deals with local pathology affecting the optic nerve and visual pathways. Over 50% of all intracranial lesions involve the visual or oculomotor pathways. Neuro-ophthalmology is generally practiced as a non-surgical subspecialty, but it can be combined with surgery of the eye and orbit.
Ophthalmic Pathology
Ophthalmic pathologists have training in both ophthalmology as well as, and subsequently, pathology. Because of the unique combination of skills involved in this subspecialty, it is usually the ophthalmic pathologist, rather than the general pathologist, who examines tissue specimens from the eye and adnexa.
Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery
The practice of ophthalmic plastic surgery includes orbital surgery, lid and upper facial reconstructive procedures following trauma and tumours, and cosmetic lid surgery. Oculoplastic surgeons combine ophthalmic surgery with plastic surgery, and are trained in the use of radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and chemosurgery to treat ocular and orbital disease.
Pediatric Ophthalmology
The bulk of paediatric ophthalmic practice involves the medical and surgical management of strabismus, amblyopia, genetic and developmental abnormalities, and a wide range of inflammatory, traumatic, and neoplastic conditions occurring in the first two decades of life. This subspecialty also deals with the ocular manifestations of certain systemic disorders.
Vitreoretinal Diseases
This subspecialty involves both the medical and surgical treatment of retinal and vitreoretinal disease. The types of diseases treated include manifestations of local, systemic, and genetic diseases as they affect the retina and vitreous. Diagnosis involves the use and interpretation of ultrasound, fluorescein angiography, and electrophysiology. Treatment methods include laser therapy, cryotherapy, retinal detachment surgery, and vitrectomy (removal of the vitreous).
Urology
A ParkwayHealth, we are committed to providing our male and female patients with rapid, highly accurate diagnosis, and effective, quality treatment for a wide range of urological and genital problems. Our specialists are focused on non-invasive and minimally invasive treatments combined with the latest in advanced technology services to give our patients the best possible results and care.

Benign Prostate Hyperplasia(BPH): Surgical Treatment
Surgery involves removing the enlarged part of the prostate that constricts the urethra. It is recommended for patients who experience serious complications, such as the following:
- Bleeding through the urethra as a result of BPH
- Damage to the kidneys caused by urine backing up
- Frequent urinary tract infections
- Inability to urinate
- Stones in the bladder
TURP
Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is the gold standard to which other surgeries for BPH are compared. This procedure is performed under general or regional anaesthesia, and takes less than 90 minutes.
Green light laser therapy
GreenLight™ Laser Therapy is a minimally invasive procedure produces results that are similar to TURP with fewer complications (e.g., less intra-operative bleeding). It is performed with a small fibre that is inserted into the urethra through a cystoscope. The fibre delivers high-powered laser energy, which quickly heats up the prostate tissue, causing the tissue to vaporize. This process is continued until all of the enlarged prostate tissue has been removed. Natural urine flow is rapidly restored, and urinary symptoms are quickly relieved in most patients.
Benefits of laser therapy over traditional surgery include the following:
- Shorter hospital stay
- Shorter catheterization time
- Shorter recovery time
Prostatectomy
If the prostate is greatly enlarged, if the bladder has been damaged, or if the patient has complications prohibiting transurethral surgery, prostatectomy (removal of the obstructing prostate) may be necessary. This procedure is sometimes the best and safest approach.
Prostatectomy is performed under general or regional anaesthesia. The surgeon makes an external incision in the lower abdomen, or in the perineum (area between the rectum and the scrotum). If the surgeon accesses the prostate from the abdomen, the procedure is called suprapubic or retropubic prostatectomy; surgery through the perineum is called perineal prostatectomy. Once access is gained, the prostate is removed
